Bayelsa State Council for Arts and Culture Excels in NAFEST and Abuja Carnival 2010

The 24th edition of the National Festival of Arts and Culture (NAFEST 2010) took place in Uyo, the Capital of Akwa Ibom State. The seven days cultural festival which took place from 30th October – 7th November 2010 with the theme: Cultural Industries and Economic Empowerment gathered the 36 States including the Federal Capital Territory Abuja to exhibit and promote the rich cultural heritage of Nigeria.

 At the close of the festival, Bayelsa State was declared overall second position while Nassarawa State came first and the host State, Akwa Ibom came third. Events featured in the festival include competition of

·       Indigenous Music and Dance

·       Children Solo Performance

·       Documentary Films

·       Food Fair

·       Craft Exhibition

·       Traditional wrestling.

 

The Festival was declared open by the President Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan ably represented by the Governor of Akwa Ibom State His Excellency Chief Godswill Akpabio.There was also a colloquium where different paper presentations were made on the arts and culture by different scholars. Bayelsa State was represented by an 80 man contingent ably directed by the Executive Director of the State Council for Arts and Culture, Mr. Ineye Johnny Dudafa.

Similarly, the 6th edition of the famous Abuja Carnival took place from the 27th -30th November in Abuja Capital of Nigeria. Bayelsa State was placed overall 5th position at the end of the Carnival.

Events featured in the Carnival include:

·       Craft Market

·       Street Carnival/Opening Ceremony

·       Children’s Performance

·       Durbar

·       Food Fair

·       Cultural Night

·       Masquerade Fiesta

·       Boat Regatta

·       Command Performance.

The Executive Director, Mr. Ineye Johnny Dudafa is grateful to God for the brilliant outing. The Council also thanks His Excellency, Chief Timipre Sylva Governor of Bayelsa State for his prompt response in releasing funds for the festivals. The Council believes that the best is yet to come as it prepares for 2011.
